Taproot Consulting is the practice of consultant Beth Trigg.
Beth grew up in the Southern Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina and has worked with organizations and communities in WNC for more than 20 years. Grounded in a deep commitment to equity and social change, Beth works with organizations, collaboratives, and movements to build capacity, create consensus, access resources, and develop strategy.
Beth's approach to working with clients is open, participatory, collaborative, and creative. With roots in popular education, anti-oppression organizing, and formal and informal consensus process, Beth draws on a lifetime of experience as a participant in movements and organizations.
As a facilitator, Beth offers structure and space for groups to build power, hone skills, and create the change that they envision together.

Always Learning - I am committed to my own ongoing learning and growth, and to inviting groups I work with to engage in learning together. I see learning as a lifelong process, and my own analysis, tools, and skills are constantly evolving. I support organizations in building a culture of ongoing learning and evolution, and in creating learning organizations.
Resource Mobilization - I believe that communities and organizations have abundant resources, knowledge, and capacity to create change. I see the facilitator and strategist's role as that of supporting groups in unlocking their own potential and mobilizing resources within the community to catalyze their shared vision.
Leadership by People Most Affected - I believe that the people and communities most affected by systemic and structural inequity have the expertise, skill, and wisdom needed to transform systems and lead the way to a more just, inclusive, and equitable world.
Popular Education - I believe in participatory process that values the wisdom and experience of each individual. I am commited to popular education - recognizing and honoring each person's expertise and wisdom from their own lived experience. I believe that everyone has something to teach and everyone has something to learn.
Caring and Trust - I believe that collective work is most effective and powerful when all participants are invited into a safe, caring, supportive space where they can bring their full selves and all of their gifts to the work. I believe that building caring, transparent, and trusting relationships within a group opens up powerful possibilities for collective strategy and action.
Embodiment and Open-Heartedness - I am committed to an embodied, open-hearted approach to facilitation, incorporating ritual, movement, storytelling, and other practices that engage participants as whole human beings and invite people to deepen their relationships with one another as they work together.
Equity and Inclusion - I recognize the structural nature of oppression. I apply an equity lens to my work with groups, which means centering the experiences of those most impacted by structural oppression in developing strategies that are grounded in equity and inclusion. I recognize that racism is woven through all social issues.
Transforming Dynamics of Power and Oppression - As a facilitator, I am not neutral toward power dynamics within groups. I believe that transforming oppressive power dynamics is part of the role of the facilitator in the popular education tradition. I bring an intersectional feminist perspective to my work with groups, understanding that all forms of oppression are connected, including transphobia, heterosexism, ableism, classism, sexism, and white supremacy.
Systems Thinking - I love systems and structure, and I believe that building systems and capacity through training, planning, and community-building can help organizations create greater impact with their work. I bring a birds-eye perspective, looking at whole systems and adding structural analysis..
Rooted in Place and Community - I believe that organizations thrive when they are strongly rooted in and sustained by the communities in which they work. I respect the unique characteristics of the diverse communities and places that are home to the groups with which I work.
A taproot is a strong, central root from which other roots sprout. Plants with taproots are strongly anchored in the ground. A taproot can break through and grow around obstacles, and like all roots, draws nourishment and resources from the soil around it to feed the plant and enable it to live, grow, and flourish.
